Protection of Jerusalem's historical heritage site is
vital to preserving the character of the city but more
important still is the need to preserve the living
stones. Palestinian inhabitants in the Old City
are often forced to live in substandard conditions due
to the lack of funds and capacity to properly restore
their, often ancient, living structures.
The Restoration and Reclamation Department works to
restore and renovate properties in the Old City with a
particular focus on raising the living standard of
Palestinian Jerusalmites while preserving the historic
character of their buildings. Together with local
partners and initiatives, this Department raises the
funds necessary and contributes engineering experties to
carry out renovation projects in the Old City.
